Sam Underhill: England and Bath back-row signs new contract

Bath fans have received a boost with the news that England back-row Sam Underhill has signed a long-term contract extension with the Premiership outfit.

Underhill’s previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2023 but he is now staying at Bath for an undisclosed period which the club described as “long term”.

The 26-year-old, who returned to action in Saturday’s Premiership loss at Exeter after a lengthy stint on the sidelines due to a shoulder injury, is excited about the Bath’s future under the guidance of head of rugby Johann van Graan.

“I have learned an incredible amount over the past five years at Bath,” said Underhill.

“I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing where I can take my game with the group of staff and players we have here.

“I want to contribute to a successful Bath side and I know everyone is pulling in the same direction to help the club achieve great things in the seasons to come.”

Key player for Bath and England

Underhill joined Bath from the Ospreys in 2017 and was part of the England side which reached the World Cup final in Japan in 2019.

Van Graan said: “Sam has proved his quality at international and club level for a number of years.

“He is a leader, has fantastic defensive qualities and still has a great desire to develop his game.

“Sam complements the other back-row players who will be with us next season and we are excited by the impact he will continue to have on the group.”

Underhill joins Alfie Barbeary, Josh Bayliss, Chris Cloete, Jaco Coetzee, Ted Hill and Miles Reid, who have all recently pledged their futures to the West Country outfit.
