Nice interested in signing Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel

L’Équipe report this evening that Nice, having failed to secure the signing of Swiss international Yann Sommer, have turned to Leicester City man Kasper Schmeichel, who is interested in the prospect.

Les Aiglons have been on the lookout for a new starting goalkeeper after the departure of the Franco-Argentine Walter Benítez to PSV Eindhoven, and looked set to sign Sommer before the Borussia Mönchengladbach man decided not to join his compatriot Lucien Favre on the Riviera.

After being approached, the Danish international, now 35, had asked for time to reflect on the offer, and has let Nice know that he would be interested, but only under certain conditions.

With his contract expiring at the end of next season, Schmeichel wants to leave Leicester on good terms, having been at the club for 11 years and notably won the 2016 Premier League title with the Foxes. The aim in the next few days would be to gauge the feasibility of the move with the English side and to be able to ensure the move happens with all parties content. Talks are ongoing, but it is unclear whether they are tending in favour or against the transfer materialising.

The Dane would be the idea profile for Nice, who are looking for an experienced head in a young dressing room, who can also mentor Marcin Bułka after the Pole’s loan move from Paris Saint-Germain was made permanent.
