Speaking to the media after Paris Saint-Germain’s conceded a draw late on against Reims on Sunday night, Christophe Galtier lamented his team’s loss of form this month, having already dropped points in three league games since the turn of the year.
After a first half which saw the visitors at ease on the ball and carve out the most chances, PSG managed to recompose themselves as Neymar opened the scoring shortly after the break. But Reims continued to push, and were helped out by Marco Verratti’s red card for a dangerous challenge on Junya Ito, the Italian exiting the field of play just 15 minutes after coming on to make his return from an injury absence.
For Galtier, the first half saw his team “show nothing interesting, very little movement, vertical play, we took a lot of time to get the ball out”, and be wasteful in possession. After pointing out that he was “not worried, but upset”, the manager recognised that his team’s performances were not at the level they were before the World Cup and that work would need to be done.
He nevertheless insisted that it was not a question of a “crisis of confidence”, although going on to suggest that the high standards asked of the club’s players had dropped in recent weeks.
“There will be decisions to make. The players worked well this week, but that wasn’t reflected on the pitch. We can’t be satisfied with this. Decisions will be made in order to foster competition again. We’ve fallen into a comfort zone. We’re going to need to shake ourselves up.”
