Auxerre sack manager Jean-Marc Furlan

L’Équipe report this morning that Auxerre have made the decision to sack manager Jean-Marc Furlan, with the team currently sitting just above the relegation zone in 16th place.

The coach was notably in a precarious position after a controversial sending off in the defeat to Clermont this past weekend, in which he showed the middle finger to opposing fans on two occasions and later sought to justify the gesture.

Furlan guided the club to promotion last year via the play-offs after finishing in third, but has only managed two wins in ten so far in the top flight.

The club had released a statement yesterday in the wake of the middle finger incident, in which it sought to distance itself from Furlan’s behaviour, with the manager stating in his post-match press conference that he had no regrets and explained that the crowd had been insulting him.

They explained that his actions do “not align with the values of respect and fair-play which the club has always advocated for and extolled. We would like to offer an apology to the Clermont fans as well as our own supporters.”
