Jacks battle on final day of Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Juniors Joe Brewster and Cody Pack and sophomore J.J. Everard all won matches on the second day of the Southern Scuffle. As a team, South Dakota State finished in 17th place with 28.5 points.

“I’m proud of our guys, they are close to breaking through” head coach Chris Bono said. “We’re very excited for the second semester.”

Brewster went 2-1 for the second straight day as the 165-pounder recorded a sudden victory over Casey Kent (Pennsylvania), 2-1. Brewster went on to defeat Jesse Stafford (Air Force), 3-2 before dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 16 Joe Booth (Hofstra).

Pack also went 2-1 on day two of competition at 157, as he controlled No. 18 Tristan Warner (Old Dominion) from the get go and won by decision, 9-3. Following a 6-4 sudden victory win over Jordan Henrickson (Oregon State), Pack dropped a 6-5 decision to No. 6 Kyle Bradley (Missouri). Bradley held a riding advantage over Pack, to give him the decisive point.

Everard went 1-1 on the final day of competition, recording a 5-2 win over Adam Robinson (Central Michigan), before dropping a major decision to Jacob Aiken-Phillips (Cornell), 17-8.

Senior Eric Orozco and redshirt freshman Trey Hable were also in competition, as Orozco dropped an 8-4 decision to Jeff Canfora (Pennsylvania), while Hable fell to Jace Bennett (Cornell), 12-2.

The Jacks will return to the mat on Jan. 19 vs. Wyoming in Gillette, Wyo.
