Philippe Coutinho: Jurgen Klopp’s advice to former Liverpool man on Barcelona move appears to have come true

A year on from completing his dream move to Barcelona, it’s fair to say things haven’t gone as Philippe Coutinho would have liked.

The Brazilian has failed to nail down a regular spot in the first-team and now his future is in doubt as Barca are considering selling him to help fund a deal to re-sign Neymar.

There were also reports that Liverpool’s long time rivals Manchester United were interested in the playmaker.

Coutinho’s departure from Liverpool got messy at points in the summer of 2017 as the club tried everything to keep their best player.

One of the things Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said to him before he left has now appeared to have come true, however.

In May 2017, Klopp advised Coutinho: “Stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour.

“Go somewhere else, to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, to Real Madrid, and you will be just another player. Here you can be something more.”

Coutinho did manage to score his first goal since October on Thursday night in a game where Barca lost to Levante in the Copa del Rey.

After the match, Barca boss Ernesto Valverde warned the No.7 that he needs to improve.

Valverde said: “When you do not play and you are not happy, you have to fight to change the situation. Today was a match for that.

“Coutinho is a great player who has given us a lot and will give us a lot.”
