Mavericks Defeat Wolves 24-10 in NSIC Finale; Finish 10-3

Mankato, Minn. — No. 8 Minnesota State (10-3, 7-1) remained perfect at home this season with a 24-10 win over Northern State. MSU, which finished the year 7-0 at Taylor Center, won five-consecutive matches starting at 149-lbs to secure the win – three of the five wins were major decisions.

Junior David Demo and freshman No. 7 Alphonso Vruno opened the dual with back-to-back wins to give MSU an early, 6-0 lead.

After dropping a decision at 133-lbs, freshman Thomas Allen began the Maverick charge, starting at 149-lbs with a 17-6 major decision win. Following freshman Sawyer Hoffman’s 4-1 win at 157-lbs, No. 7 Cody Quinn and No. 4 Aaron Norgren each recorded majors of their own at 165-lbs and 184-lbs respectively. No. 4 Brendan Eichmann earned a 10-6 win at 174-lbs in between the major decisions.

MSU would drop the final two contests of the night, including a major decision in the heavyweight bout to give MSU the 24-10 win.

The Mavericks will return to action Feb. 24 as they travel to Waterloo, Iowa to compete in NCAA Super Regional 3, with qualifiers advancing to the NCAA Championship March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
