The 2015 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 57 honorable mention wrestlers.
Wrestlers, representing 77 teams, were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers will receive two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Jackson County Central wrestler Luke Norland. Luke capped his high school career with the Class A 170-pound state title, a 45-2 record, and a 3.995 GPA.
Not far behind Norland is senior Josh Tarum of St. Thomas Academy, junior Mitchell McKee of St. Michael-Albertville, and senior Paul Fitterer of Cannon Falls/Randolph.
Everyone on the first team placed fifth or higher at state this year, including 12 champions and seven runners-up. First team members have an average of 41 season wins, an average season win percentage of 92%, and an average GPA of 3.86.
Sixteen nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Josh Altermatt of Wabasso/Red Rock Central, Dietrich Balsbaugh of Trinity School at River Ridge, Nik Borchert of Mille Lacs, Chase DeFrang of Plainview-Elgin-Millville, Seth Elwood of Apple Valley, Grant Jepson of Frazee, Ben Kelvington of Scott West, Evan Kluck of Wayzata, Kyle Nordstrom of Simley, Zach Nygaard of St. Michael-Albertville, Miles Patton of Rochester Mayo, Bryant Ridgway of Trinity School at River Ridge, Jackson Schauer of Grand Rapids, Will Smith of Pipestone Area, Logan Swanson of Mankato East, and Josh Tarum of St. Thomas Academy.
Four nominees finished as undefeated 2015 state champions: Andrew Fogarty of Scott West, Mark Hall of Apple Valley, Alex Hart of Prior Lake, and Garrett Malstrom of Frazee.

Luke is a four-time state placer winning the 170-pound Class A title this year. He placed 4th at 160 pounds as a junior, 6th at 152 pounds as a sophomore, and 4th at 152 pounds as a freshman. Luke had an impressive season record of 45-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 176-33 including 81 pins. Luke’s GPA is 3.995. Honors and achievements include being ranked #1 academically in his class of 93 students, 2014 Junior freestyle All-American, four-time all-conference, two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament runner-up, two-time Clash Scholar Athlete award winner, three-year team captain, and 2015 Junior folkstyle national champion and OW. Luke is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Northwestern University, major in economics, and wrestle for Drew Pariano and the Wildcats. Luke’s parents are Kelly and Denise and his coach is Randy Baker.
Josh won the Class AA title this year at 106 pounds. He is a four-time state entrant. Josh had an impressive season record of 42-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 130-20. Josh’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2015 MWCA Academic All-State, four-time all-conference, and three-time Eagle Award winner (GPA 3.66 and above). Future plans are to attend a four-year university and explore a medical field. Josh’s parents are Jim and Marie and his coach is Nick McCarthy.
Mitchell is a two-time state champion, a three-time finalist, and a four-time place winner. He won the 126-pound Class AAA title this year as a junior and the 120-pound title as a sophomore. Mitchell also placed 2nd at 106 pounds as an eighth-grader and 3rd at 106 pounds as a freshman. Mitchell had an impressive season record of 47-2. His current career record is 220-19 (92.1 win %). Mitchell’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, three-time all-conference, three-time academic all-conference, 2014 junior freestyle national champion, 2013 cadet Greco national champion and freestyle runner-up. Mitchell is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota and major in engineering. Mitchell’s parents are Nina and Steve and his coach is Dan Lefebvre.
Paul won the Class AA title this year at 126 pounds. He was runner-up at 113-pounds as a junior. Paul also placed 3rd at 106 pounds as a sophomore. He had an impressive season record of 39-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 179-30 including 53 pins. Paul’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, three-year team captain, MWCA Academic All-State, two-time cadet folkstyle All-American, two-time cadet Greco AA, junior Greco AA, Minnesota Cadet Triple Crown, and 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State. Paul is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota for Mechanical Engineering. He will continue to wrestle for the Storm at the Minnesota Training Center with a focus on Greco. Paul’s parents are Steve and Brenda and his coach is Dudley Flodeen.
Garrett is a two-time state entrant winning the heavyweight Class A title this year. He placed 3rd at heavyweight as a junior. Garrett finished his season undefeated with 38 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 111-17 including 60 pins. Garrett’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, three-time Wells Fargo All-State Tournament Team, Football Class A All-State Academic Team, three-time all-conference for football, 2014 HOL Conference Most Valuable Linebacker, 2013 North Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Future plans are to attend NDSU and study Pre-Med. Garrett plans to walk-on to the Bison football team as a fullback. Garrett’s parents are Judy and Jay and his coach is Clay Nagel.
David is a three-time state placer winning the 132-pound Class AA title this year. He placed 3rd at 126 pounds as a junior and 4th at 113 pounds as a sophomore. David had a season record of 47-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 183-27. David’s GPA is 3.79. Honors and achievements include MWCA Academic All-State, four-time section champion, two-time Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, and four-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament place winner. David is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at NDSU and study engineering or finance. David’s parents are Al and Sarah and his coaches are Darren Ripley and Jerold Stauffacher.
Treyton won the Class AA title this year at 138 pounds. He is a five-time state entrant. Treyton had a season record of 34-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 174-57 including 75 pins. Treyton’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include five-time all-conference, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2014 football all-conference, played on two state runner-up football teams, and 2014 honorable mention all-conference for baseball. Treyton is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and possibly play football or wrestle. He is considering Concordia, Augustana, and other MIAC schools. Treyton’s parents are Jon and Sherri and his coach is Jair Toedter.
Ethan is a two-time state entrant winning the 106-pound Class A title this year. He placed 5th at 106 pounds as a sophomore. Ethan had an impressive season record of 46-1. His current career record is 88-12 including 49 pins. Ethan’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference and two-time academic all-conference. Future plans are to win a second state title as a senior. Ethan’s parents are Shane and Tova Eggerstedt and his coach is Matt Ryan.
Jackson is a three-time state entrant winning the 182-pound Class AA title this year. He placed 5th at 182 pounds as a junior. Jackson had an impressive season record of 44-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 147-42 including 60 pins. Jackson’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include Aspire Athlete of the Week, Lakeshore of the Week, Star Tribune of the Week, passed two AP tests as a junior, and Wright County Conference Linebacker MVP for football. Future plans are to wrestle at Michigan and study Mechanical Engineering. Jackson’s parents are Jeff and Michelle and his coach is Joe McPherson.
Jared is a four-time state entrant and three-time place winner. He was the Class A 145-pound runner-up this year. He placed 3rd at 132 pounds as a junior and 6th at 126 pounds as a sophomore. Jared had a season record of 42-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 188-47 including 49 pins. Jared’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State, 2015 MWCA Academic All-State, six-year letter winner, five-time all-conference, three-year team captain, three-year Team MVP, and 2014 all-conference for football. Jared is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend college. Jared’s parents are Dean and Stephanie and his coaches are Nick Kulseth and Travis Elg.
Miles is a three-time state entrant and two-time place winner. He was the Class AAA 145-pound runner-up this year. He placed 4th at 138 pounds as a junior. Miles had a season record of 40-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 157-41 including 70 pins. Miles’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State, five-time all-conference, and Iowa State Award for Competitive Excellence (academic scholarship). Miles is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Miles’s parents are Steve and Bonita and his coach is Art Trimble.
Dietrich was the Class A 152-pound runner-up this year as a junior. He is a two-time state entrant. Dietrich had a season record of 39-5. His current career record is 155-47 including 78 pins. Dietrich’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, summa cum laude in the National Latin Exam, Excellence Awards in mathematics, science, and the humanities, Rumble on the Red Tournament place winner, MN/USA Greco state champion, and school ambassador. Future plans are to attend college and study Mathematics and Philosophy. Dietrich’s parents are Jon and Jennifer and his coach is Pat Murphy.
Mark has won five state titles in five tries. He won the 170-pound Class AAA title this year as a junior, the 170-pound title as a sophomore, the 152-pound title as a freshman, the 145-pound title as an eighth grader, and the 130-pound title as a seventh grader. Mark finished his season undefeated with 45 wins. His current career record (MN) is 229-4 (98.3 win %) including 150 pins. Mark’s GPA is 3.73. Honors and achievements include 2014 FILA Cadet World Champion, MWCA Academic All-State, cadet and junior national champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, and winner at 2014 Flowrestling’s Who’s #1. Future plans are to wrestle at a four-year university, to be a national champion, and to be a world champion. Mark’s parent is Mark Hall and his coach is Dalen Wasmund.
Victor was the Class AAA 106-pound runner-up this year as a junior. He is a two-time state entrant. Victor had a season record of 45-3. His current career record is 75-19 including 31 pins. Victor’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include being a member of Farmington Captains Council and being on the ‘A’ Honor Roll for eight trimesters. Victor is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle in college. Victor’s parents are Steve and Kelley and his coach is Chad Olson.
Nik is a four-time state entrant placing 3rd at 145 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed 6th at 138 pounds as a junior. Nik had an impressive season record of 41-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 218-39 including 89 pins. Nik’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include four-time Great River Conference champion, 2015 Conference Wrestler of the Year, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, six-time all-conference, and three-year team captain. Nik is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at Augsburg. Nik’s parents are Jon and Stacy and his coach is Brady Hermel.
Paden won the Class A title this year at 160 pounds. He was runner-up at 145-pounds as a sophomore. Paden also placed 3rd at 152 pounds as a junior and 5th at 145 pounds as a freshman. Paden had an impressive season record of 46-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 229-52 including 123 pins. Paden’s GPA is 3.61. Honors and achievements include 2015 USA Wrestling folkstyle national champion (two-time All-American), 12-0 at The Clash with 12 pins, 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State, 2015 MWCA Academic All-State, 2014 Northern Plains freestyle champion, 2014 Minnesota Christmas Tournament runner-up, huddle leader for JCC FCA, and current #15 for most career wins in Minnesota. Paden is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Northern Iowa and major in exercise science. Paden’s parents are Jay and Rhonda and his coach is Randy Baker.
Thomas is a two-time state entrant placing 3rd at 120 pounds this year in Class AA. Thomas had a season record of 38-5. His current career record is 109-39 including 40 pins. Thomas’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference. Future plans are to attend a four-year college and possibly wrestle. Thomas’s parents are Paul Stageberg and Karrie McEvilly and his coach is Jair Toedter.
Timmy placed 3rd at state this year at 182 pounds in Class AA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Timmy had an impressive season record of 39-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 93-28. Timmy’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include 2014 JJ Classic champion, three-time letter winner, four-time academic letter winner, team captain, Minnesota Christmas Tournament place winner, and 12-time Spotlight on Scholarship Award winner for football, wrestling, track and field, and baseball. Timmy’s parents are Tim and Kim and his coach is Larry Goodnature.
Jared is a three-time state entrant and two-time place winner. He was the Class A 113-pound runner-up last season as a junior. He placed 3rd at 120 pounds as a senior. Jared had a season record of 43-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 122-14 including 60 pins. Jared’s GPA is 3.83. Honors and achievements include 2015 MWCA Academic All-State and is active in Student Senate, FFA, and 4-H. Jared is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at MSU-Moorhead. Jared’s parents are Amy and Dan and his coach is Joel Viss.
Aaron is a two-time state entrant placing 3rd at 138 pounds this year in Class AAA. Aaron had a season record of 38-10. He ended his high school career with a record of 97-53. Aaron’s GPA is 3.86. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, five-time letter winner, three-time all-conference, academic all-conference, two-time team ‘Most Valuable Wrestler’, Top-50 GPA in his class of 384, multiple Principal’s Honor Roll recipient, and two-time academic letter winner. Future plans are to wrestle at Augsburg, get a degree in secondary education, become a teacher and a wrestling coach. Aaron’s parents are James and Nicole and his coach is Mike Phillips.
Jackson is a three-time state entrant placing 4th at 145 pounds this year in Class AA. Jackson had a season record of 39-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 170-44 including 95 pins. Jackson’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, finished third in all-time career wins in Grand Rapids, Team MVP in 2015, 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, 2015 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, All-Area and Mat King Conference Wrestler of the Year, will graduate from Itasca Community College with high honors and an Associate Arts degree, and Dean’s List every semester at ICC. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and pursue an English Education degree. Jackson’s parents are Michael and Mary and his coach is Dan Jinks.
Colten is a four-time state entrant and two-time place winner. He was the Class AAA 152-pound runner-up as a freshman. He placed 4th at 152 pounds this season as a junior. Colten had a season record of 43-6. His current career record is 180-38 including 99 pins. Colten’s GPA is 3.95. Honors and achievements include winningest wrestler in Willmar history, three-time all-conference, NHSCA Nationals All-American, three-year team captain, Brute Nationals champion, JJ Classic champion, and football captain. Future plans are undecided. Colten’s parents are Carl and Kelli Carlson/Jon and Leah Kreps and his coaches are Ed Oehlers and Justin Brown.
James is a three-time state entrant and two-time place winner. He was the Class AA heavyweight runner-up this year as a junior. He placed 3rd at heavyweight as a sophomore. James had a season record of 30-9. His current career record is 123-50 including 81 pins. James’s GPA is 3.78. Honors and achievements include 2015 MWCA Academic All-State. His future plans are undecided at this time. James’s parents are Tana Wood and Charles Huwe and his coach is Rob Ullyott.
Brock is a three-time state entrant and three-time place winner. He was the Class A 106-pound runner-up last year as a junior. He placed 3rd at 113 pounds as a senior and 5th at 106 pounds as a sophomore. Brock had a season record of 42-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 121-22. Brock’s GPA is 3.76. Honors and achievements include four-time letter winner, 2015 Wells Fargo All-Tournament Team, 2014 Guillotine Academic All-State, 2012 Rumble on the Red Tournament champion, four-year Spotlight on Scholarship recipient, four-year student council, 12th grade class president, Peer tutoring, and Special Olympics volunteer. Brock is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend South Dakota State University to become a nurse anesthetist. Future plans for wrestling are to come back and help coach. Brock’s parents are Jeff and Rhonda and his coach is Joel Skillings.
Hank is a two-time state champion and a four-time place winner. He won the 145-pound Class A title this year and the 138-pound title as a junior. Hank also placed 3rd at 120 pounds as a sophomore and 5th at 103 pounds as a freshman. Hank had an impressive season record of 43-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 200-22 (90.1 win %) including 81 pins. Hank’s GPA is 3.43. Future plans are to wrestle at South Dakota State University, become a teacher and a coach. Hank’s parents are Kari and Andy and his coach is Joel Viss.
Damon is a two-time state entrant placing 4th at 145 pounds this year in Class A. Damon had a season record of 36-10. His current career record is 65-35. Damon’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include two-time Valley Conference all-conference, KNUJ Wrestler of the Week, ‘A’ Honor Roll, Knowledge Bowl, two-time all-conference Honorable Mention for golf, and two-time golf section qualifier. Damon is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to study biology/chemistry at a four-year college and then pursue a master’s degree. Damon’s parents are Andy and Kim and his coach is Andre Harnitz.
Jackson is a three-time state entrant placing second at 132 pounds this year in Class AA. Jackson had a season record of 29-4. His current career record is 121-35 including 44 pins. Jackson’s GPA is 3.75. Honors and achievements include member of MN/USA Wrestling national duals team (Oklahoma City), member of MN/USA Wrestling national team (Fargo), maintaining a cumulative GPA above 3.6 while accessing 14 college credits as a junior, and state participant in Business Professionals of America. Jackson is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to earn All-American honors while wrestling at a DI or DII level and pursue a degree in either engineering or a pharmaceutical field. Jackson’s parents are Brett and Julie and his coach is Joe Traen.
Blane is a four-time state entrant and four-time place winner. He was the Class A 132-pound runner-up this year as a senior. He also placed 3rd at 126 pounds as a junior, 3rd at 113 pounds as a sophomore, and 5th at 106 pounds as a freshman. Blane had an impressive season record of 44-1. He ended his high school career with a record of 177-12 (93.7 win %) including 86 pins. Blane’s GPA is 3.59. Honors and achievements include three-year team captain, three-time all-conference, five-time Greco All-American – two-time national runner-up, and third at Junior World Team Trials. Future plans are to wrestle at Concordia and major in Mathematics. Blane’s parents are Mike and Char and his coach is Mike Schindler.
Samuel is a five-time state entrant and three-time place winner. He was the Class AAA 113-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He placed 5th at 120 pounds as a junior and 3rd at 132 pounds as a senior. Samuel had a season record of 41-3. He ended his high school career with a record of 177-21 including 51 pins. Samuel’s GPA is 3.71. Honors and achievements include five-time section champion, four-time all-conference, team captain, and two-time MWCA Academic All-State. Samuel is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle and become an All-American in college and then pursue a job related to Mathematics. Samuel’s parents are Dave and Deb and his coach is Todd Munsterteiger.
Parker is a four-time state entrant placing 5th at 152 pounds this year in Class AA. He also placed 4th at 152 pounds as a junior and 6th at 145 pounds as a sophomore. Parker had a season record of 43-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 214-44 including 63 pins. Parker’s GPA is 3.98. Honors and achievements include 2014 MWCA Academic All-State, 2015 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, Mid-State Conference MVW, and all-conference for football. Future plans are wrestle in college and pursue a career in medicine. Parker’s parents are Todd and Jennifer and his coach is Rob Ullyott.
