Woman Scams Walmart Out Of Almost $8,000 In 40 Minutes: Report

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI — A 32-year-old Texas woman and her accomplice have been arrested and charged after investigators say they ran a scheme at two Walmart stores in the area – netting nearly $8,000 in stolen funds from unwitting cashiers in a matter of 40 minutes at one stop.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Racine County, Jocelyn Carter and her accomplice entered the Walmart on Oakes Road on June 30, 2018 and conned one cashier after another into giving her Walmart cash cards for free.

Investigators say when Carter was done, she and her accomplice defrauded cashiers and Walmart out of $7,954 in funds.

The criminal complaint stated that Carter and an accomplice were able to have employees load funds onto the card as if the cashier had been accepting cash from them for a purchase.

Investigators say Carter and her accomplice then told the employees to hit the cash button on the register a second time, as a second keystroke confirmed that the cash was accepted.

Carter and her accomplice spent a total of 40 minutes in the store, each going through register lines, and each loading separate cash cards via the same scheme, investigators said.

Investigators later learned that Carter and the accomplice cashed out the cards at a Wells Fargo ATM located at 6005 Durand Ave., which is near Walmart.

According to the criminal complaint, Carter was identified by investigators following a similar scheme she staged at the Franklin Walmart. Police say they were able to track her down via video surveillance footage.

Carter has been charged with felony theft and could face three years behind bars if she is convicted. According to court documents, Carter was released on a $1,000 signature bond and is due back in court on May 16 for her preliminary hearing.
