CHICAGO — Chicago’s famous “serial stowaway” was arrested again Friday night at O’Hare International Airport, seven months after she received probation as part of a plea deal in a prior felony trespassing case.
Chicago police said Hartman, 67, formerly of Grayslake, was spotted around 10:05 p.m. Friday in Terminal 1 at O’Hare attempting to pass through airport security without a boarding pass or identification.
Police said Hartman, who now lives in Chicago, was denied entry and taken into custody on another felony criminal trespassing charge.
Earlier this year, Hartman was sentenced to 1-1/2 years probation after admitting to sneaking past security at O’Hare in January 2018 and boarding a plane before being apprehended by British customs at London’s Heathrow Airport. Hartman is prohibited from being at O’Hare or Midway without a boarding pass as part of her probation agreement.
In March, Hartman was told by a Cook County judge she must continue her mental health treatment and stay away from both airports unless she has a ticket. She faced other charges, but those were dropped as part of the plea deal.
Serial Stowaway: How She Evaded Airport Security
In July 2018, Hartman was determined mentally fit to stand trial. Four months earlier, she was deemed unfit following mental health evaluations by two psychologists who found she understood the charges against her but suffered from delusions and was focused on getting attention from the media.
Hartman has been arrested multiple times for attempting to bypass airport security and sneaking into both Midway and O’Hare airports. In July 2015, she was arrested twice in a span of two days, first at Midway and then the following day at O’Hare. In one of the incidents, despite having a valid boarding pass, police said she caused a disturbance as she boarded her New York-bound plane at Midway.
Earlier in 2015, Hartman was arrested in Minnesota after she was accused of boarding a Florida-bound plane without a ticket, and in 2014, she was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after sneaking onto a flight to San Jose, California.
Hartman was due in bond court Sunday morning.
