Huddersfield Town parted company with David Wagner on Monday with the club rock bottom of the Premier League.
The club now have the unenviable task of appointing a new manager mid-season who will keep them in the top flight.
Make the wrong decision and they will be playing Championship football again next season.
Whoever they appoint will not have an easy job to do as they are eight points off safety and have won two games all season.
Sam Allardyce has effectively ruled himself out of the running for the job – so things must be dire if Big Sam does not think he can turn it around.
Let’s start with the experienced Premier League managers without a job.
Mark Hughes
The 55-year-old was sacked as manager of Southampton in December after just one win in their opening 14 league matches.
His Premier League record before has been fairly good with a number of top 10 finishes for the club’s he’s managed.
Hughes also has history of leading sides to safety as he got Queens Park Rangers out of trouble in the 2011/12 campaign.
David Moyes
Moyes has managed four Premier League clubs with the most recent spells at West Ham resulting in their survival.
He enjoyed steady success at Everton over a decade before taking over at Manchester United. It has been all downhill from there, though, as he was sacked in his first season at the club.
The 55-year-old had a brief spell at Real Sociedad before getting Sunderland relegated to the Championship and then left the Hammers at the end of last season.
Alan Pardew
Pardew has a lot of history in dealing with clubs near the foot of the Premier League, and not a great deal of success in turning things around.
He was sacked by West Ham in 2006, with the club in a relegation battle, and joined Charlton Athletic, another club fighting for their lives. The Hammers stayed up but the Addicks were relegated with Pardew.
The 57-year-old finished fifth with Newcastle United one season before he left to join Crystal Palace. He guided Palace to safety that season but was sacked after a poor start in 2016/17.
His spell at West Brom was short lived, appointed in December with the club in danger of relegation and was sacked by April after a run of eight successive defeats.
Huddersfield picked up Wagner from Germany so they may look to the continent for their next boss.
Peter Stoger
The 52-year-old has more than a decade managerial experience in Austria and Germany.
He was in charge of Cologne and got them promoted to the Bundesliga in 2014 and enjoyed finishes of 12th, ninth and fifth in the following seasons.
Stoger took over at Borussia Dortmund in December 2017 with the club in eighth. He guided them to Champions League qualification and brought Jadon Sancho into the starting XI.
Heiko Herrlich
Herrlich was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen in December after an average start to the Bundesliga season.
He has a fairly good managerial record and has coached Germany national age group squads and at Bayern Munich under-17s.
