Who is Florian Grillitsch? The Hoffenheim midfielder who is a transfer target for Tottenham

Tottenham have set their sights on Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele.

The Austrian has put in some accomplished performances for both club and country this season and could reportedly be snapped up by Spurs for £18million if his release clause is triggered.

But who is Florian Grillitsch? talkSPORT.com wanted to know more about the man who is reportedly one of Mauricio Pochettino’s top targets this month.

Background

Grillitsch started his early career with Austrian sides Pottschach and St. Polten before departing for Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.

After two years with the green and white outfit he made his senior bow for the side in 2015 and impressed for them with his controlled displays in midfield.

After four years he then sealed a move to Hoffenheim in January 2017 and has performed well consistently since then.

He is now one of the first names on the teamsheet for Hoffenheim.

How does he play?

Grillitsch is very much an orchestrator like Mousa Dembele, albeit perhaps less defensively strong than the Belgian.

He likes to dictate the tempo in the middle of the park and has a very good understanding of the game.

The Austrian also is no stranger to picking up a goal or two, he once netted nine goals in a season for Werder Bremen II before being promoted to their first team.

However, he is yet to score a goal in the league for Hoffenheim this season

Ar 23, Grillitsch is already very much a seasoned professional, having competed in his side’s Champions League run this season and scoring once too.

What is being said?

About his own playing style, Grillitsch once said: “I would describe myself as a midfielder, who has his strong points in attack.

“I can read the game well and I can anticipate situations ahead of time. Beside my good understanding of the game and tactical discipline I also have pace, the willingness to run and a good passing game on my side.

“I can keep hold of the ball rather well and if necessary I can head the ball well due to my height.”
