Following the rapid completion of the group stages, squeezed into the calendar before the World Cup which gets underway later this month, the Champions League last 16 draw has been made at UEFA headquarters ahead of the return of the competition next February. The headline tie is perhaps a repeat of last season’s final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, which UEFA’s draw master Giorgio Marchetti referred to as having “a lot of spice”. Another “spicy” tie for many will be Chelsea’s pairing with Borussia Dortmund. French champions PSG, meanwhile, will face the side that defeated them in the competition’s 2020 final, Bayern Munich. Benfica, meanwhile, who narrowly won Paris’ group, are rewarded with a seemingly more winnable tie against Belgian side Club Brugge.
