Ligue 1 side St Étienne retain renewed hope in appointing New York City FC coach Patrick Vieira as their new manager, according to L’Équipe.
The 40-year-old informed the local New York press that he would remain at the MLS side, but jobs that Vieira would have liked, at Manchester City and Arsenal in the near future, have closed up with renewed confidence in Pep Guardiola and a contract extension for Arsène Wenger.
Vieira is however not guaranteed to accept the role with St Étienne, but Les Verts have a back-up option.
Red Bull Salzburg boss Oscar Garcia has an agreement in principle with St Étienne representative David Wantier to join the Ligue 1 outfit. Garcia is seeking to leave Les Verts because of the recent departure of Salzburg’s General Manager Jochen Sauer, who has gone to Bayern Munich.
Garcia has received many offers with his departure not yet being official, one of those comes from FC Nantes too, who have lost Sergio Conceição to FC Porto. Garcia has also agreed to keep the St Étienne coaching staff in place, so long as he can bring in 2 or 3 assistants.
Sources told L’Équipe yesterday that a deal between Garcia and St Étienne was done at 80%. Garcia’s agent Josep Maria Orobitg, also the man who deals with Pep Guardiola’s affairs, has personally taken control of negotiations. Final details need to be agreed today, but there is already an agreement between the two clubs.
Claude Puel in the meantime, who is still technically the manager of Southampton, has been discarded from the race.
If Vieira says no, it is Oscar Garcia.
