Ouest France report this afternoon that four Angers fans have been taken into police custody for allegedly taking part in the clashes between fans when the team hosted Marseille in September.
After the game, which ended 0-0, tensions between the two sets of supporters came to a head as Marseille fans stormed the pitch to confront Angers fans, at which point fights broke out.
After analysing footage from broadcasters and surveillance cameras, investigators have identified five suspects among the Angers fans. All five were summoned to the police station today, with four showing up. The four are being questioned and are being charged with entering the field of play and of instances of violence.
The Angers public prosecutor has indicated that the Marseille fans involved will be investigated in a “second phase” of the case.
Following the events on September 22, Ligue 1 authorities made Angers close down one of their stands for one game – with an additional game as a suspended sentence – and pay a €20,000 fine. The event also saw Marseille fans sanctioned with a ban from away games until the end of the calendar year.
