Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi: “I have no regrets about leaving PSG”

In an interview with So Foot, 20-year-old central defender Tanguy Nianzou Kouassi talks of his experiences at both Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Now happy in La Liga, the French youth international said he had “no regrets” about leaving Les Parisiens.

Kouassi left PSG at 17 for the Bundesliga. Knowing that the competition for a spot in Bayern’s starting 11 would be just as tough as in Paris, the Frenchman cited Bayern’s attractive project as his personal motivation for the transfer. However, he appeared just six times as a substitute in his first season after injury and fitness woes kept him out. The following campaign (2021/2022), however, saw a marked improvement in his playing time, where he managed a goal and an assist from 17 appearances, 11 of which were from the bench. A player hungry for more playing time, he then transferred to Sevilla for €20m.

Reflecting on his path, Kouassi said, “I have no regrets about [leaving PSG]. Bayern Munich was an important step in my journey. That taught me that you can’t rest on your laurels; you always have to work for what you want. You can proclaim anywhere that you want to play, but without work, it’s worthless.”

Last relegated from La Liga in 2000, the Andalusian side currently sit 18th in the Spanish top flight, as they approach the halfway point of the season. A poor run of form precipitated Julen Lopetegui’s departure in October last year, and current manager Jorge Sampaoli has struggled to revive the club.
