To nearly everyone’s surprise, the “Phenomenal One” AJ Styles defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to retain the WWE Championship in the co-main event of WrestleMania 34.
After the bout, which has been advertised as a “dream match” for the last several months, the 2018 Royal Rumble winner presented the title to his renewed rival in what seemed like a show of respect. Nakamura then unexpectedly hit the triumphant champion with a low blow, drawing gasps from the 77,000+ at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome as he dropped Styles with a knee strike right between the eyes. The “Artist” of Smackdown Live did not stop there, disrespectfully slapping Styles and kicking him in the back of the head until he fell out of the ring without his title.
