This past Monday marked the 25th anniversary of Vince McMahon’s 1993 indictment for steroid distribution. McMahon’s indictment was part of a conspiracy investigation into WWF Physician George Zahorian. While under indictment, Vince temporarily handed control of the then-WWF to his wife Linda McMahon.
The trial that followed was a veritable circus. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York alleged that McMahon had Pennsylvania Urologist Dr. George Zahorian to write steroid prescriptions, that were then shipped to WWE’s famous “Titan Tower,” where the drugs were then distributed among the wrestlers. The U.S. Attorney’s witnesses ended up sinking the case, with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) providing little usable evidence, and Kevin Wacholz’s (fka Nailz) testimony being called into question, as the former-Nailz said that he “hated” Vince McMahon. Vince McMahon was acquitted of all charges.
The trial had numerous repercussions. Swollen wrestlers like British Bulldog were sent packing, and wrestlers with more natural physiques, like Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels, were pushed to the top of the card. Kevin Nash has said repeatedly that he was selected as WWF Champion due to still being over 300 lbs. without steroids.

The trial was brought up again in 2001, on the September 13th episode of SmackDown. On the first live sports broadcast since the 9/11 attacks, Stephanie McMahon compared the attacks on the World Trade Center & Pentagon to the attacks on her family during the steroid trial.
“A few years ago, some people tried to destroy my family. They attacked my father’s reputation, they attacked my mother’s reputation, and they attacked the World Wrestling Federation. They tried to rip us apart, but all they did is make my family stronger, and that’s exactly how America feels right now. Because on Tuesday, America was attacked, but America is a united nation, and together we stand strong. I am incredibly proud to be an American citizen, and I will stand up for my rights and my freedom.”
Vince McMahon is still the Chairman & CEO of WWE. Linda McMahon is currently serving as the head of the Small Business Administration. Stephanie McMahon is currently the Chief Brand Officer of WWE. Dr. George Zahorian is still practicing Urology in Hershey, PA.
