#2 Huskies Show Well at Cobber Open

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team enjoyed another solid weekend of tournament action on Nov. 17. The Huskies competed at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, which was hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. The tournament featured several of the top college wrestlers in the upper midwest, and it included a Gold Division and Maroon Division.

Sophomore Eric Forde, who hails from Fargo, N.D., captured second place in the Gold Division with a 2-1 overall record that included a 13-6 loss to Dylan Peters of Division I rival Northern Iowa in the championship bout at 125-pounds.

At 141-pounds, SCSU’s Jay Hildreth also captured second place at the Cobber Open with a 3-1 record. In the title bout, Hildreth dropped an 8-2 decision against DI rival Joey Lazor of UNI. SCSU’s Matt Nelson placed 3rd at 141-pounds thanks to an 8-6 win over unattached wrestler Tyler Diamond. Of note, SCSU senior Eric Ellington added a sixth place finish at 141-pounds at the Open.

At 149-pounds, SCSU’s Josh Howk enjoyed a strong performance at the Open with a third place finish that included a pin at 4:01 over Thomas Giaimo in the third place match.

SCSU’s Clint Poster placed third at 157-pounds that was capped by a 4-2 victory in the third place match over Pat Smith. Poster charted a 3-1 record at the Open.

Senior Shamus O’Grady continued his strong start with a second place finish at 184-pounds. He gained two pins and a tech fall on the way to the finals. In the title bout, O’Grady lost a close 8-5 match against Brett Pfarr of DI rival Minnesota.

To cap the action in the Gold Division Open, SCSU’s Chris Brassell gained a second place finish at 197-pounds. Brassell was 3-1 on the day and lost a 7-3 match in the title bout against Joel Bauman of Minnesota.

The Open also featured the Maroon Division, which was designated for freshman wrestlers (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen).

Caleb White led the Huskies in the Maroon Division with a first place finish at 285-pounds. Third place finishes in the Maroon Division were gained by Huskies Elliott Zander (184) and Matt Leibforth (141). Fourth place finishes in the Maroon Division were collected by SCSU grapplers Jared Kust (133), Cullan Morrisey (141) and Ryan Schoepfer (149).

SCSU will continue its season on Dec. 8 when the Huskies host the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open in Halenbeck Hall. Action starts up at 9 a.m. and tickets may be purchased at the gate.
