“Aren’t you supposed to be dead?’’
Brian Bakke heard the question from friends back in his high school days on occasion. Technically, they were right. But Bakke didn’t appreciate the reminder.

“I’d get upset when they’d say it,’’ Bakke said. “It wasn’t something we talked about at home. It wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I started thinking about the possibility of a shortened life span.”
The 42-year-old Bakke has spent a lifetime battling cystic fibrosis and beating the odds. CF, a genetic disorder, is a lifelong condition in which glands that produce mucus don’t function properly, leading to, among other things, breathing difficulty and impaired digestion.
