Former NJPW star makes NXT debut at TV tapings

One of professional wrestling’s biggest international stars made his Full Sail University debut at Wednesday night’s NXT television tapings.

Kota Ibushi, former IWGP junior heavyweight champion and current Cruiserweight Classic participant, faced Buddy Murphy on the taping. He won with a sit-out powerbomb.

Ibushi was one of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s top stars and the face of the DDT promotion in Japan before departing both companies in early 2016 to work as a freelancer and start the Ibushi Pro Wrestling Institute, the goal of which was to research the various styles of pro wrestling.

Ibushi has made a couple appearances for DDT since, but has not competed in NJPW since October of 2015.

Ibushi appeared on camera at the NXT TakeOver: Dallas show over WrestleMania weekend and there was speculation that he could be headed to WWE. He was later announced as one of the 32 participants in the CWC tournament.

It is not yet known whether Ibushi will be competing for NXT permanently or if his appearance at the taping was just to promote the CWC.
