#1 SCSU wrestling claims NSIC crown with 27-3 victory over Augustana

The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (16-0, 8-0 NSIC) claimed the outright Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship for 2019-20 with a 27-3 victory over Augustana University (10-4, 6-2 NSIC) on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

SCSU collected wins at nine weights in the victory over the Vikings, which helped the Huskies clinch their ninth consecutive NSIC title. SCSU has now won NSIC titles in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. The Huskies have also won 76 consecutive NSIC dual matches dating back to an 18-13 loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011. The victory also marked the Huskies’ 64th overall consecutive dual match victory dating back to a loss to Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 2017.

To open the night on Feb. 19, the Huskies saluted their three 2019-20 senior wrestlers: Kolton Eischens, Tyree Overton and James Pleski.

#2 Pleski opened the match for the Huskies with a 5-2 win at 149-pounds against Keaten Schorr of Augustana. At 157-pounds, SCSU’s #2 Jake Barzowski posted a 9-4 victory over AU’s Jacob Tvinnereim to give SCSU a 6-0 lead.

In action at 165-pounds, SCSU’s #3 Devin FitzPatrick added another win with a 6-1 decision against AU’s Bailey Neises. At 174-pounds, #4 Eischens scored a 10-5 victory for the Huskies over #8 Ben Kelvington to push SCSU’s match lead to 12-0.

At 184-pounds, #2 ranked Tyree Overton lost a thriller by a score of 8-6 in overtime against Augustana’s Kolby Kost. The Huskies quickly returned to the win column after the intermission with a 5-2 win at 197-pounds by #9 ranked Noah Ryan and Ezayah Oropeza posted a close 9-8 win over AU’s Steven Hajas at 285-pounds.

In another overtime barnburner, SCSU’s Brandon Betancourt scored a 4-2 sudden victory win over AU’s Ethan Cota at 125-pounds. The completed the night with an 8-1 win by #2 Garrett Vos against #9 Jack Huffman of Augustana at 133-pounds, and a 9-4 win by Joey Biachini vs. AU’s Hunter Burnett at 141-pounds.

Both the Huskies and the Vikings set their sights on the Super Region 5 Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 29.
