Family of The Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation To Run Lincoln Half

The Lincoln Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 1st October 2017 and lining up at the start will be three people for whom the race holds particular significance. Darren and Samantha Maull, and Sam’s cousin Dawn, will be running the Lincoln Half Marathon for The Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation, the legacy of their little boy who lost his life to bone cancer three years ago.

The Foundation is one of the official charities for the Lincoln Half Marathon and one which event organisers OSB Events are delighted to be able to support.

The charity was set up by Ethan Maull himself as he battled the disease, aged just 8. He saw first-hand the devastating effects that cancer has on children and the financial burden it places on families needing treatment for long periods away from home. From Ethan’s wish to help others, the Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation was born.

Ethan sadly lost his fight against cancer in May 2014, but the Foundation continues to make a huge difference to children and families facing the same struggles. Their ultimate mission is to fund a home in Lincoln, to be called Ethan’s House, where families can stay while their children receive cancer treatment, and they have so far raised £295,000 towards this goal.

“We have a team of builders and groundsmen who will be donating their time for free,” explains mum Sam, who is hoping that plans for Ethan’s House can get under way next year.

It is this deserving target that is behind Darren, Sam and Dawn’s decision to run the 2017 Lincoln Half Marathon. Yet for someone who admits she doesn’t really run, Sam is impressively laid-back about the challenge ahead. “We ran the Lincoln Half Marathon last year,” she says, “and it was such good fun and with such amazing support that we thought we should do it again.”

They can certainly look forward to incredible support as they take on the 13.1-mile route through historic Lincoln for a second time. Wearing their Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation vests and with plenty of awareness among the local community already, the family are hoping that their efforts will help to increase exposure for the charity and any donations they may receive as a result will be a bonus.

In addition to the physical challenge, it will certainly be an emotional day for Darren and Sam, the route of the half marathon covering the same ground as for Ethan’s final journey up to Lincoln Cathedral, one of the city’s most important landmarks.

“The support at the race is fantastic,” confirms Sam. “When people see us running and see the logo and the smiley faces on our vests it’s amazing – everyone is cheering you on and it really helps you to keep going! The stewards last year were also wonderful, handing out water and gels, and the atmosphere was incredible. It felt totally right to run the race again this year, with Ethan’s charity being the official local charity.”

So it is that Darren, Sam and Dawn will be lacing up their running shoes and squeezing in a few training runs over the next couple of weeks in advance of race day. Whilst Sam admits that more experienced runner Darren will probably be ahead of them on the day, she is hoping to beat her previous half marathon times of 2:44, set at the 2015 Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon (also organised by OSB Events) and 2:30 set at the 2016 Lincoln Half Marathon. Ethan would certainly be immensely proud to see her cross that finish line.

Race Director Iain Hamilton commented: “The Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation is a charity close to our hearts and we are very happy to be able to support them at the 2017 Lincoln Half Marathon. It is an honour to have Ethan’s family take part. For anyone else wishing to run and support the charity, it is not too late to enter and be a part of this superb day of sporting achievement in one of the UK’s most picturesque cities.”

Late entries for the Lincoln Half Marathon are being accepted until 25th September. Entry costs £32 affiliated / £34 non-affiliated. Anyone registering between now and 25th September will need to collect their race pack the day before the race.
