CARTERSVILLE, GA — An officer with the Cartersville Police Department has been commended by a neighboring agency for saving the lives of two motorists trapped inside a burning vehicle last month in Floyd County.
Corporal Justin Lusian, who has served 19 years with the Cartersville Police Department, was in the area of a fiery vehicle crash on July 18 at the intersection of Jones Road at Ga. 293/Kingston Highway. Floyd county officers arrived to find the engine compartment of the truck fully engulfed, and the blaze quickly spreading to the passenger area of the vehicle. The motorists who were inside the vehicle had been removed and were being seen to by bystanders.
Floyd County police learned that Lusian arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and “immediately went into action, pulling the victims from the burning vehicle,” according to a letter of commendation written by Sgt. Rusty Williams of the Floyd County Police Department. He also organized those bystanders to help care for the wounded while keeping them a safe distance from the burning truck.

“These actions were, in my opinion, of the highest tradition of law enforcement and public safety,” Sgt. Williams states. “Corporal Lusian’s disregard for his own safety surely preserved the lives of the two passengers in the vehicle and made their medical treatment possible much quicker that would have been without his actions.”
Lusian was honored on Thursday, Aug. 2 by Cartersville Police Chief Frank McCann, Deputy Chief
Jason DiPrima and Major Terry Ellis, who presented the veteran cop with the agency’s Life Saving Award for his courageous actions.
“For those of us who know Corporal Lusian, this act was not out of character in the slightest for him, as he is one of the most skilled and experienced police officers any department could ask for,” the Police Department said. “The Cartersville Police Department family pray for the speedy recovery of those involved in this
terrible crash.”
