“Gloria Bell”— Julianne Moore, John Turturro; directed by Sebastian Lelio
A remake of Sebastian Lelio’s 2013 Chilean film, “Gloria,” the filmmaker’s new movie is a dramedy that delves into the ups and downs of being middle-aged, all through the eyes of a woman in her golden years.
“Gloria Bell” stars Julianne Moore as Gloria, a 50-year-old divorcee with two adult children (Michael Cera and Caren Pistorius). She loves to dance, so she spends her nights socializing at a disco club catering to the over-50 crowd. While she may be lonely, she’s certainly not desperate for romance.
In one of those evenings, she encounters Arnold (John Turturro), a recently divorced man who falls for her beauty and smile. The two hit it off and begin a romantic relationship. But Arnold’s past will get in the way as he deals with his clingy ex-wife and two adult daughters.
See it. Moore’s spontaneity and impulsiveness are captivating. Plus, the movie feels real and breathtaking.

“The Kid” — Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Dane DeHaan; directed by Vincent D’Onofrio
Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio reunite for another Western adventure following their co-starring roles in “The Magnificent Seven.”
This film takes place in 1879’s American Southwest, and stars Jake Schur as Rio, a 13-year-old boy traumatized by domestic abuse and violence. When his father violently attacks his mom one night, Rio takes matters into his own hands and shoots his father to death. In turn, the teenager and his sister, Sarah (Leila George), must flee town to escape their Uncle Grant (Chris Pratt), their father’s mean and vengeful brother.
As the siblings make their way to Santa Fe in search of help, they cross paths with the hard-nosed Sheriff Pat Garrett (Hawke), as well as the notorious outlaw known as Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan). Will Rio and Sara make it out alive as the two arch-enemies settle a long-standing score between them? And which side will Rio ultimately take— the good or the evil one?
Skip it. Overall, the flow of the narrative feels inorganic. By the end, it becomes vague and unforgettable.
