MIAMI, FL — It was just last week that Shanica Harris posted to Facebook her birthday present from her husband, Eddie. She included a picture of a silver Mercedes with a red ribbon around it.
She joked that her husband knows silver is not her color when it comes to cars.
“Now he knows I love red cars!!!” she wrote. “But OMG!!!!!!!!! Why couldn’t I pick out my own car?”
Eight days later, Shanica Harris was dead. Police say that her husband shot and killed her before shooting himself. He survived. Two of their grandkids were in the house at the time.
Miami-Dade police were called to the 6000 block of NW 23rd Ave. just before 9 p.m. on Saturday night.
Police say that a call to 911 reported a woman had been shot and the shooter was still inside.
Arriving at the scene, they saw two men running from the house.
The men said that Harris had been shot, the husband had a gun and that two of the couple’s grandchildren — a 5-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl — were still inside.
The police department’s Special Response Team was able to get the kids out through a bathroom window. At that time, they were able to confirm that Shanica Harris had been shot.
Officers made their way into the home where they found her. They also discovered Eddie Harris suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was rushed to the trauma center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Police are still trying to figure out what led to the shootings.
