NEW YORK, NY — Wealthy sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was found injured Wednesday in his Manhattan jail cell after a possible suicide attempt, according to reports.
Epstein was found lying in his Metropolitan Correctional Center cell in the fetal position with injuries to his neck, sources told NBC News, which first reported on the injuries suffered by the Manhattan investment banker. Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how Epstein got hurt, but have not ruled out a suicide attempt or an assault.
Another inmate at Metropolitan Correctional Center, former Westchester police officer and accused murderer Nicholas Tartaglione, was questioned in relation to Epstein’s injuries but his lawyer told NBC News that he didn’t attack the accused sex predator. Attorney Bruce Barket told several news outlets that his client and Epstein had been getting along well and that his client was only questioned because he had been complaining about conditions at the Manhattan jail.
Two of NBC News’ sources said the incident could be a suicide attempt, a third said it could be part of a ploy to get transferred to a different facility and a fourth said assault has not been ruled out.
A federal judge recently denied Epstein bail, ensuring the wealthy financier will remain behind bars as he awaits trial on sex-trafficking charges. Epstein’s lawyers requested that the court let the financier stay under supervision in his sprawling Upper East Side mansion, where federal prosecutors allege that he sexually abused several teenage girls.

Epstein has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted teen girls for years at his New York and Florida homes, paid them hundreds of dollars and got his victims to recruit others for his abuse. He is due back in court July 31.
