Brumbies re-sign Lucas

Brumbies halfback Matt Lucas has re-signed with the club through to 2020.

Lucas came to Canberra at the start of the 2018 season after a stint with the Waratahs and quickly became a regular part of the team.

His re-signing follows that of first-choice Joe Powell, who is committed until 2020 as well, and rookie Ryan Lonergan.

“I am delighted to have been able to extend my stay with the Brumbies,” Lucas said.

“The Brumbies really provide a fantastic environment in which to play your rugby and I’ve loved every minute so far. The playing group we’ve got here is something I don’t take for granted and I’m so grateful to be able to be a part of this team for at least another season.

“I’m so thankful for the support I’ve had from the club and the wider ACT community since arriving and I’m so excited to be able to continue playing in Brumbies colours.”

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said Lucas’s skills and experience were valuable to the club.,

“Matt is a good footballer,” he said.

“His point of difference is his left foot as he is a very good kicker and has a good clearance game with good control.

“He is a real competitor, plays well above his weight and is highly respected throughout the group. Matt understands and knows the game well and contributes well on and off the field. We are fortunate to have someone of Matt’s experience.”

Returning halfback Nic White was expected to potentially join the Brumbies but this deal almost certainly means the current Exeter halfback will not be back in Super Rugby until 2021.
