ROCHESTER, Minn. – Rock Valley College won three times, including twice against Herkimer Valley, on the final day to capture its sixth straight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III national title. The Golden Eagles become the first NJCAA program to win six national championships.
The Golden Eagles, who were defeated by the Generals yesterday, forced the if necessary game with a 21-6 thumping and then took home the championship with a 6-1 triumph.
RVC reached the title game by edging Brookdale, 4-2, in its first contest of the day. The Golden Eagles broke a 2-2 deadlock with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Trinity Fry and a run-scoring triple off the bat of Paige Webster.
Rock Valley pounced on Herkimer in game one jumping out to an 18-1 lead after four innings. The Golden Eagles put crooked numbers on the board twice with a seven-run first and an eight-run fourth. Highlighting the first was a bases loaded triple by Emily Perkins and Webster produced the fireworks in the fourth with a grand slam.
In the if-necessary game, a four-run fouth broke open a one-run game and keyed the Golden Eagles to a 6-1 win and their sixth crown. Cara Alexander had the big hit in the frame, roping a two-run single to make it 3-0. Alexander finshed the contest 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Breanna Crown went the distance, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking four.
