ST. GEORGE, Utah – Behind a 22-hit attack, Chipola College scored 19 unanswered runs and defeated Angelina College, 19-2, in the 2019 National Junior College Athletic Association Division National Championship game on Saturday at the Canyons Complex. It marks the third national title for the program under the direction of Belinda Hendrix.
After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Chipola put together back-to-back five-run innings to grab a comfortable 10-2 advantage after three frames.
The Lady Indians’ (52-5-1) five-run second was highlighted by Mikayla Lewin and Haley Sandridge home runs. In the third inning, the Lady Indians scored five more on six hits. Thais Uyeme, Sydney Mclain, Candela Figueroa, and Sandridge all had recorded an RBI in the inning pushing the lead to 10-2.
Chipola added two more in the sixth and seven in the seventh, which included an Ally Clegg long ball.
The Lady Indians scored 69 runs in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Belinda and Jimmy Hendrix were named Coach of the Year. Figueroa was named Tournament MVP and Offensive Player of the Tournament. Clegg was named Defensive Player of the Tournament and Amy Woodham was named Pitcher of the Tournament.
