Wayne Rooney was speaking ‘broken English’ and had a ‘strong odour of alcoholic beverage about his person’ when he was arrested for public intoxication last month.
The former Manchester United and England captain was left disorientated after mixing sleeping pills with alcohol while on a flight from Saudi Arabia.
Rooney was then arrested in Virginia last month by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police (MWAA) for public intoxication.
The 33-year-old, who plays for DC United in the States, paid a small fine and was released shortly after the incident.
The incident report, obtained by Deadspin, reveals how the arresting officer was dispatched after receiving reports of a person trying to gain access though a secure door.
“I approached the individual and asked what happened,” reads the report, “and in his broken English he stated he went through the door … because he thought it was a lift. The subject provided a United Kingdom passport and the individual was identified as Wayne Mark Rooney.”
The incident report then appears to corroborate Rooney’s story about the sleeping pills. “Mr Rooney had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage about his person, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet,” the report says.
After promising to appear in court, the father-of-four paid a $25 (£20) fine plus $91 costs.
This is not the first incident involving Rooney and alcohol in recent years.
In September 2017 he admitted drink-driving on a night out when he was caught driving a woman’s Volkswagen Beetle when nearly three times the legal limit. He was banned from driving for two years and ordered to carry out unpaid work in the community.
