Ranieri ‘wants Liverpool defender’ as first Fulham signing

Claudio Ranieri wants to make Liverpool defender Joel Matip his first signing at Fulham, according to reports.

The Italian took over at Craven Cottage on Wednesday after the club sacked Slavisa Jokanovic with his side bottom of the Premier League standings.

Matip has just started one Premier League game under Jurgen Klopp this season and he has fallen down the pecking order since Virgil van Dijk’s arrival at the club last January.

Despite having two years left on his contract at Anfield, he could look to make a switch in search of regular first-team football.

And, reports in Turkish media outlet A Spor, claim that Fenerbahce’s transfer plans for Matip could be scuppered by Fulham.

Damien Comolli, who is Liverpool’s former director of football, wants to bring the Cameroon international to his new club in Turkey.

However, the report continues by saying that Ranieri is ready to make Matip his first signing in the January transfer window.
