Rangers sent a scout to watch Charlton striker Karlan Grant over the weekend.
Reports in Scotland suggest the Gers want to sign the 21-year-old on a pre-contract deal this month.
Grant, who has scored 13 goals to push Charlton up to third in League One this season, has six months remaining on his contract.
A Rangers scout watched Grant in Charlton’s 3-0 win at Shrewsbury on Saturday.
The young attacker impressed by winning and converting a 79th-minute penalty to move his side to within three points of the top two.
The Scottish Sun claim Rangers boss Steven Gerrard views Grant as a long-term replacement for 20-goal forward Alfredo Morelos, who has been linked with moves to France and China.
Grant has established himself as a key player for Lee Bowyer’s side after spending time on loan at Cambridge and Crawley in previous seasons.
Rangers would have to pay Charlton a development fee if they were to wait until the summer to sign the former England Under-19 international.
Under current rules, clubs must pay compensation for players under the age of 24 who are out of contract.
