Olivier Giroud: Chelsea’s World Cup-winning striker linked with shock Barcelona transfer

Barcelona are interested in a January move for Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud, according to reports.

As talkSPORT explained yesterday, Barcelona are on the hunt for a new striker to provide support to Luis Suarez, their first-choice centre-forward.

Munir El Haddadi left Camp Nou for Sevilla last week meaning Suarez remains the only natural striker in Ernesto Valverde’s squad, and reports linked Barca with a swoop for Fernando Llorente, the Tottenham flop.

However, RMC Sport now say Giroud is a target for the LaLiga leaders, despite scoring just 10 goals for Chelsea since joining the Blues this time last year.

The 32-year-old remains a bench player under Maurizio Sarri, the Chelsea manager, with Eden Hazard preferred as a false nine.

Sarri also hopes to bring a new forward to Stamford Bridge this month, with Chelsea’s other striker, Alvaro Morata, expected to leave the club to make way for Gonzalo Higuain.

Morata has similarly been linked with a shock move to Barcelona, with rumours of the Spain international heading to Camp Nou being reported before World Cup winner Giroud was named as a target.

RMC Sport’s report does claim that Giroud is not the priority for Barcelona, however, with Cristhian Stuani, the in-form Girona forward, at the top of their shortlist.
