Nottingham Forest are set to appoint Martin O’Neill as their new manager.
The Reds have been looking for a successor to Aitor Karanka after parting company with the Spaniard last week.
A club statement said Karanka “asked to be released from his contract”.
O’Neill, who left his role as Republic of Ireland boss in November, is a legend at the City Ground after winning two European Cups as a player under Brian Clough.
Forest are ninth in the Championship and four points off the top six after losing to relegation-threatened Reading on Saturday.
They have won just once in seven league games and risk losing out on promotion if their poor form continues.
O’Neill guided the Republic to the last 16 of the 2016 Euros, but failed to win a competitive game in 2018 as they were relegated from their Nations League group.
Former Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic, Carlos Carvalhal and Paulo Sousa have been linked with the Forest job.
However, O’Neill is now the clear favourite to replace Karanka.
