Incredible Leeds United statistic prove Championship leaders have one of the best academies in the country

Leeds United have a long and proud tradition of producing excellent homegrown players from their academy.

The likes of Alan Smith, Jonathon Woodgate and Aaron Lennon began their careers at Elland Road and went on to have distinguished careers.

But the youth system at the Whites is not simply just a conveyor belt of talent to be sold.

An incredible statistic discovered by Twitter account @lufcstats has proved managers at the club give youth a chance.

The last time Leeds United fielded a side without an academy graduate was on December 15, 2009 in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game against Accrington Stanley.

In the club’s 100-year history, they have played 4508 games and named an academy player in 4504 of them.

Friday night’s victory over Derby County saw recent graduates Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Jack Clarke start the game.

Goals from Kemar Roofe and Jack Harrison gave the Whites a 2-0 win and means they have a four point lead over Sheffield United at the top of the table.
