Arsenal transfer news: Goalkeepers who could replace Petr Cech, including Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid stars

Petr Cech announced his retirement from football on Tuesday leading to the inevitable questions over who will Arsenal replace him with.

The Gunners reportedly paid £22million for Bernd Leno in the summer and he has displaced Cech as first choice.

The retiring stopper started the season as number one but Leno has gone on to make 20 appearances after usurping in the early matches of the campaign.

Arsenal fans will be curious as to whether they will go out to sign a back up goalkeeper or if they will look for a genuine challenger for the German.

So, who are the possible options for the Gunners come the start of the 2019/20 season?

Bernd Leno

The most likely candidate to be first choice next season.

In 16 Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season he has kept just one clean sheet and conceded 23 goals.

Prior to signing for the Gunners, he kept nine clean sheets in 30 Bundesliga matches for Bayer Leverkusen in the 2017/18 campaign.

He came through the youth academy at Stuttgart and at 19 years old was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen in 2011 where his career took off.

Jack Butland

The 25-year-old was once considered England’s future but will have to do a lot to displace Jordan Pickford from the number one position.

He is undoubtedly talented and with the current position of Stoke City in the Championship he could be looking to move back to the Premier League.

In the summer, the club slapped a £30million price tag on Butland, which could put Arsenal off.

Jan Oblak

The current Atletico Madrid number one is widely regarded as one of the best in the world at the moment.

He’s also said he would like to one day play in the Premier League but seems relatively happy in Spain.

Chelsea activated the £90million release clause in his contract in the summer but he wanted to stay at Atletico.

The best stat to illustrate how good he is between the sticks is that following the Madrid derby in October, Oblak had kept more clean sheets (72) than he’d conceded goals (71) since the 2014/15 season.

Samir Handanovic

The Inter Milan goalkeeper has been subject to rumours about his future at the Italian club and he could be heading for the exit in the summer.

The 34-year-old may be entering the twilight of his career but is still one of the leading ‘keepers in world football.

Last season he proved why he is regarded as one of the best as he kept 17 clean sheets in 43 games.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

The AC Milan number one is still only 19-years-old but is developing into a world-class goalkeeper.

Despite still being a teenager, Donnarumma has made 144 appearances for the Italian club.

His relationship with the Milan fans has been difficult with supporters reducing him to tears in December 2017 when they unfurled a banner telling him to leave the club.

Keylor Navas

Arsenal were said to be leading the race to sign the Real Madrid stopper with reports of a €13million bid imminent.

Navas, who has won the Champions League three times with the Spanish giants, has found first team chances limited after they signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea.
