MINNEAPOLIS — With five wrestlers who competed in the NCAA Division III National Championships earning National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-America recognition, the Augsburg College wrestling team recorded the eighth-highest team grade-point average among Division III wrestling teams, it was announced recently.
Augsburg recorded a 3.47 team grade-point average, good for eighth place in the Division III national ranking. It’s the 12th time Augsburg has earned a top-10 national honor in the NWCA’s Scholar All-America team rankings since 1998. According to the NWCA, “Criteria for the team award is cumulative grade-point average of 10 wrestlers, of which at least six must have competed at the NCAA Regional this year. The 10 GPAs are then averaged.”

Five Auggie wrestlers earned NWCA Division III Scholar All-America honors, led by heavyweight Chad Johnson (SR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS), who earned the honor for the third straight year. Auggie 149-pounder Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho) and 184-pounder Tommy Teigen (JR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) each earned the honor for the second time in their careers, and 133-pounder Chad Bartschenfeld (JR, Amery, Wis.) and 165-pounder Justin Bowland (SR, Foley, Minn.) were both first-time honorees.
An elementary education major with a 3.46 GPA, Johnson became the sixth wrestler in Augsburg history to earn four or more All-American honors with his third-place finish at heavyweight this year’s national championships. A 2012 and 2013 Division III national champion and seventh-place finisher in 2011, Johnson finished his senior season with a 35-2 record, including nine pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. In his Augsburg career, Johnson finished 140-15, with 44 pins, three technical falls and 27 major decisions. He had a 108-4 record during his final three Auggie campaigns.
Both Keeter and Teigen returned to the Auggie lineup after injuries cut their 2012-13 seasons short, and both returned to the Division III national tournament in 2014.
A 2012 All-American with a third-place national finish at 141, Keeter was 27-17 with seven pins, two technical falls and three major decisions, and is 96-46 in his Augsburg career. Keeter is a math/business economics major with a 3.51 GPA.
A 2012 and 2014 national tournament qualifier, Teigen went 20-14 this season, with seven pins, a technical fall and three major decisions. He is 63-38 in his Augsburg career. Teigen is an exercise science major with a 3.58 GPA.
Bowland qualified for the national tournament for the second straight season after winning the NCAA Division III West Regional this year. He finished his senior campaign with a 26-16 record, including five pins and seven major decisions, and finished his career at 71-60. Bowland is an elementary education/math major with a 3.15 GPA.
Bartschenfeld reached the NCAA tournament for the first time after winning the West Regional title at 133 pounds. He finished his junior season with a 23-15 record, including four pins, a technical fall and three major decisions. He is 45-34 in his career. Bartschenfeld is a business management major with a 3.40 GPA.
Over the past 29 seasons, Augsburg has produced 125 NWCA Scholar All-Americans. Augsburg has had 102 student-athletes honored since 1997, including 22 under current head coach Mark Matzek — himself a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American during his Augsburg career (2001-05).
As a team, Augsburg finished fifth at the 2014 NCAA Division III national tournament.
According to the NWCA, “To be eligible for the (Scholar All-America) award, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year) and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in top six at the NCAA qualifier, or win more than 66 percent of matches and wrestle in 50 percent of scheduled dates.”
